The top of the double decker was torn off after the Regal Busways vehicle crashed into the bridge near Chelmsford railway station.
The crash happened just before 4.30pm in Duke Street in the city centre.
Trains through Chelmsford were delayed for a short time but services were back to normal by 5pm.
The bus driver was treated for shock at the scene.
Essex Police were called to Duke Street at 4.25pm.
Firefighters were called at 4.32pm.
16-year-old David McKay was sitting on the top deck when the bus hit the bridge. He told Heart: "Everything was shaking. It was really bad."
No-one was hurt in the crash although the bus driver was treated at the scene for shock.
The remains of the bus roof could be seen in Duke Street.
The roof of the bus was completely torn off.
